Takaoka castle which was built as a retired castle of the first generation Kaga lord Maeda Toshinaga.

[Description]
Takaoka castle is a castle on the plain in Takaoka city in Toyama Prefecture.
Keicho 10th year (1605) was the first Kaga lord who retired to Toyama Castle “Maeda Toshinaga”, but burned down the majority of the buildings in the castle due to the Toyama castle firing in Keicho 14th year (1609). For this reason, the Toshinaga moved to “Uozu castle” for a while.

Later in Tokugawa shogunate as a retirement castle “Takaoka castle” was requested to be built, as soon as permission went down, the castle was started and the Toshinaga moved into Takaoka castle on the way of completion in September of the same year. In addition, it was said that Takaoka Castle was the territory of Takaya Castle “Takayama Nearby” which was then welcomed as a Maeda family at the time.

The Toshinaga died in Keicho 19th year (1614) in May, it was a very short time that it was actually used as a retirement castle. Takaoka castle was regarded as the abandoned castle under the Ikkokuchi Ordinance issued by the shogunate in the first year of (1615).

The structure of the castle consists of inner citadel, Outer citadel, Outermost region of the castle, and two exits, and it was a large-scale one with sumps. The current castle site has been developed as “Takaoka Old castle park” and has been designated as a national historic site.
