Tanabe Castle (Maizuru Castle)
Hosokawa Fujitaka, who defeated Tango governor Isshiki Yoshimichi under an order from Oda Nobunaga, lived in it.

[Description]
Tanabe Castle used to stand in a plain in Maizuru City, Kyoto from the Warring States period to the Edo period. It is also called Maizuru Castle.
In the Muromachi period, Tango governor the Isshiki family worked in a residence in Yata, Kasa District. Otherwise, they were besieged in Takebeyama Castle when they fought.

In the Warring States period, Oda Nobunaga ordered Hosokawa Fujitaka to get Tango. Fujitaka defeated Ishiki Yoshimichi. At first, Fujitaka lived in Miyazu Castle. Next, he built Tanabe Castle on the main way to Kyoto to live. Isshiki residence had stood there.

In the 5th year of the Keicho period (1600), In the Battle of Sekigahara, the Hosokawas followed Tokugawa Ieyasu. The heir Tadaoki went to Aizu with Tokugawa army.

On the other hand, Fujitaka held the fort in Tanabe Castle. He was besieged in it when the western 15000 of army invaded. He surrendered after 50 days of the siege.

After the Battle of Sekigahara ended, the Hosokawa family received Buzen Nakatsu 330000 kokus estate (later they built Ogura Castle). Otherwise, Kyogoku Takatomo got in charge of Tango Province 123000 kokus estate. He set Miyazu Castle the Domain office and repaired it.

Tanabe was destroyed because the shogunate allowed only one castle per one domain. However, after Takatomo died, his heir succeeded Miyazu Domain with 75000 kokus estate, his second son succeeded Tanabe Domain (Maizuru Domain) with 35000 kokus estate, and his third son succeeded MIneyama Domain with 13000 kokus estate.

Then, Tanabe Castle was repaired. In the 8th year of the Kanbun period (1668), the Kyogoku family was transferred to Toyooka Domain. Alternately, the Makino family became the head. Its reign lasted until the end of the Edo period.

Now, the ruin is used as Maizuru Park. The gate and the stone wall are being rebuilt.
