Miyazu Castle was a water castle in current Miyazu City, Kyoto.
Tango Province was ruled by the Isshiki family from the Muromachi period.

In the 6th year of the Tensho period (1579), Hosokawa Fujitaka and Akechi Mitsuhide started attacking it with a support of Oda Nobunaga. The next year, they defeated Isshiki Yoshimichi in Takebeyama Castle.

For this achievement, Mitsuhide got Tanba Province and Fujitaka got Tango Province 120000 kokus. Fujitaka built Miyazu Castle to use it as a central office to rule the area. In the 10th year of the Tensho period (A.D.1582), Akechi Mitsuhide killed Oda Nobunaga at the Honnoji Incident. Then Fujitaka changed his name into Hosokawa Yusai and retired. After that he lived in Tanabe Castle.

In Miyazu Castle, his heir Tadaoki became the head of the Hosokawa family. In the 5th year of the Keicho period (1600), in the Battle of Sekigahara, the Hosokawa family joined the eastern army of Ieyasu. Tadaoki followed Ieyasu to Aizu Conquest with his most troops.

On the other hand, Yusai held down the fort. He burned Miyazu Castle and was besieged in Tanabe Castle when Onogi Shigetsugu and Maeda Katsushige attacked Tango Province with 15000 of troops.

Yusai toughly saved the castle. Finally, he surrendered because the Imperial court advised to. The Battle of Sekigahara ended with the victory of the eastern army. The Hosokawa family received 393000 kokus estate in for their achievement in Buzen Nakatsu.

After the Hosokawas left Tango, Kyogoku Takatomo came there. He set Miyazu Castle as the Domain office and developed the castle and the castle town. However, the second head Takakuni was deprived of his estate and his status. After that, the head of the castle changed again and again. Finally, Matsudaira Sukemasa ruled it with 77000 kokus estate when the Meiji Restoration occurred.
