Tatebayashi Castle used to stand on a plain in current Shiro Town, Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture
Although we don’t know when it was built, it is said that it was built by Akai Terumitsu in the early Warring States period (the Muromachi period).

In the Warring States period, the Uesugi family and the Hojo family fought for it desperately. Finally, the Hojo family got it. In the 18th year of the Tensho period (A.D.1590), Toyotomi Hideyoshi started Hojo Conquest. His army was besieged Tatebayashi Castle and its residents surrendered.

After the Hojo family got extinct, Tokugawa Ieyasu got in charge of Kanto. He sent Sakakibara Yasumasa to the castle with 100000 kokus estate. Yasumasa rebuilt the castle into early modern style and the castle town.

In the Edo period, the castle head changed again and again. It was in this order: the Matsudaira family, the Tatebayashi Tokugawa family, the Matsudaira family, the Ota family, the Matsudaira family, and the Inoue family. Finally, Akimoto Yukitomo from Dewa Yamagata became the head with 60000 kokus estate.

In the 1st year of the Genji period (A.D.1864), Akimoto Hirotomo became the head. He attended the Boshin War as the new government side and sent his army to Kanto Region and Tohoku Region. In the Meiji period, the Meiji government abolished all domains and established prefectures. Tatebayashi Domain was abolished and they established Tatebayashi Prefecture. Now, few traces of the castle remains.
